Paranoia - Date Created: August 16, 2010
This is something I wrote a loooong time ago. I now know that the voices left are friendly. I now understand I chose the right door. ; )
Enjoy!

Paranoia
With barely room to move or to breathe in this dark, cramped void, I call out for my life. From just beyond the darkness I hear voices mixed with sounds of laughter. I'm drawn toward them, yet, it's still unknown if they are my friends.
My mind is bombarded with indecision. My life is being twisted, molded, broken by the voices.
Every once in a great while, inviting hands reach out from the darkness behind the din. I turn away because their intentions are not clear to me. Are they friend or foe? The struggle sets my emotions running high, then low.
But, eventually, the hands stop coming. The voices go away and everything is silent, there in the void. That's when the sound of my own heartbeat becomes unbearable.
Suddenly, two unknown doors are whipped opened and I am blinded by a mass of color. A new voice breaks the silence.
"The time has come to choose," it says, gently.
I'm still astonished by the flood of color and light. Squinting and raising my hands to sheild my eyes, I try to see beyond the doors. I hesitate.
"Choose, now!" The voice booms.
I do not want to irritate it more than I have done already. So, I take a step forward. I choose. Did I make the right decision? Would I live no longer in darkness? In fear? In doubt?
Or did I choose the one that would make me snap?

3. I really like the fact that you ask so many questions in your poetry. It's as if you are confronting something and wish to seek or demand answers. Either way, your writing is very engaging. Thanks Joy.

2. That's right. ME TOO! But, what I realized is that BOTH doors were open to the light. I'll take light over darkness, any day. The point, I think, is that I had to start an action; make a choice; take that step forward...before I could ever hope to get out of the rut. Either door would have been fine, just as long as I made that first step away from the past and into the future. "For God has not given us the spirit of fear; but of peace, and of love, and of a sound mind."

1. It says gently at first, then booms "Choose". That makes me paranoid. I am distrustful of this voice.
